Winter Browsing

A bull moose browsing the buried grasses alongside the Glen Highway near Eureka Lodge.  It was morning light and not very bright yet due to the cloud cover and snowfall.  Since the moose wasn't moving very much or very fast, I left the ISO @ 100 to get the best resolution and least noise.  Unfortunately I didn't think about the fact that is was snowing lightly with very fine flakes so I ended up with the little streaks wherever there was enough contrast.  Had I thought about it I would have tried some higher ISO shots to get more shutter speed.  He was pretty close so I got a few different perspectives including a close up mug shot which I'll post later.

Sony ILCE-6000, FE 70-200 F4 G @ 119mm, ISO-100, f4.0, 1/60, hand held.

Sharp, nice background, and I like the tight crop.  It emphasizes the size of the moose.  I also like the snow streaks. At 1/30th it would be even betteer, IMHO.

Gary,

i like the mood of the image with all that snow, especially the trees at the background. You also managed to frame the moose very well. Because of the nice background and scenery I would have tried images with a shorter focal lens to get a bit more of the landscape included, but I am pretty sure that you made that ...

Gary: nicely captured. I like the pose and the contrast between the colors of the moose versus the monotone background. The snow streaks are a plus in my view. The ony thing I'd suggest would be to clone away abit of the plant that touches the moose's dewlap. Richard

Gary,

I like the snow streaks. It's a nice effect and demonstrates to the viewer what was happening that day. I also like the forest background - it really adds a great mood to the image. The plant below the moose is a little distracting, but nothing major. Great shot!

Hi Gary,

I'm with the others in liking the snowflakes and the setting. I also quite like how the brown moose stands out against the monochromatic foreground and background. My personal preference would be to have a little more room all-round (including a bit more of the environment, which adds to this shot)...but very nice exactly as posted.

Cheers...

Brad
