Antelope Canyon

August 21, 2015  We took the photographic tour at Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona and entered and departed from this location.  While August is a great time of the year for the sun location shining into the canyon, it is the wrong time of the year for crowds of tourists.  They took us through about 3/4 of the canyon going against the traffic, and then we turned around and went back.  These stairs were a challenge for an old guy carrying a tripod with a bad knee, but somehow I made it up and down without breaking my camera or myself.

Nikon D800  Nikkor 24-120  24mm  1/4  f/16  ISO400  White Balance Auto I shot part of the time in Aperature priority, but I think this show was Manual.  Processed in LightroomCC2015, PhotoshopCC2015, NIK and TK

The inclusion of the stairs is a different take on this location.  I like how they mimic the flow of the sandstone. My personal preference might be to try a slightly cooler WB to make the shadows a little less red and maybe create a bit more visual tension between the rock andshadows.  Fine as is though.

A different perspective of this location, Patrick, and one I like.  I'm used to seeing this without the ladders and with the dust in the air.  The gorgeous lines and color are still there and I like the way it contrasts with the utilitarian straight lines of the ladders.

This is great, Patrick.  I see so many images of Antelope Canyon that seem devoid of human impact, and this one does a great job of showing how ladders make it accessible.  The ladders have the same tones and textures of the rock, which just add to the effectiveness of this.  Ironic, isn't it, that you were stymied by crowds, but you came away with something unique as a result.  I like the second version with less intense oranges.  It feels more "natural" although these places do have  unnatural color when you are in them.

As an aside, I should say that some of the canyons in the Mecca Hills area of California have ladders that I totally appreciated after really scrambling and sliding on my aging and likelky increasingly fragile bones through Peek-a-Boo in Grand Staircase Escalante.  Ladders, I decided, are good things devil.
