Scroll 4 repo/Semi-Wild with Hood

Hi Folks,
Here is another in my series of black and white images.  This one was taken on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Central Oregon, and it features tribal members' "semi-wild" horses.  Many of the horses that roam the reservation are not genetically wild horses, but they are not domesticated in the same sense we think of most horses.  Some are feral, some have had little human contact, and others come and go from nearby farms/ranches at will.

Please let me know what you think of this image (and feel free to visit my gallery for others in this BW series).
Canon 7D with 100-400mm at 100mm
ISO 125, f/10, 1/640s
Processed in Nik and LR

I rreally like this photo.  I realize this is part of a B/W series and the B/W is an excellent choice. (The white horse looks a bit hot). It looks like there is some substantail wildflower color that could make an excellent color image, also.  Is this a single image? Any cropping?  Re:  semi-wild horses: There are so many on the Yakama lands that euthinizing is a real probability-there are conflicting reports on whether it has already begun. You've got a great series going.  Waiting for the next one.

Thanks, Jim.  I do have this as a color image (printed and framed, in fact) and the yellow foreground flowers are nice.  The sky is a bit blah, and while I'm not one of those people who thinks "if the sky sucks, I'll just convert it to BW," I did want to see what it would look like monochromatically.  I'm trying to get an eye for what works in color v. b/w, and so a couple of the things I'm sharing right now (here and in the Landscape gallery) are things I did not shoot or process originally with BW in mind.  I'm kind of testing an aesthetic theory for myself about texture, color, foreground complexity and color v. b/w.

I'll wait for a bit more feedback, but I'll start working on that dang white horse.

Interesting image.  I also would like to see it in color if possible.

Here are too more variations: First with less contrast and the white horse a little less hot (but I think it needs more contrast everywhere except for the horses ;-).

And now for the color version, which is processed in Viveza a bit.

For me, I like the color version best of the three.  IMHO the image is more dramatic in color.  Thanks for taking the time to post in color.

I do too, John, and it's confirming some theories I have about what kinds of scenes look good in black and white.

Marylynne,
While I love your black and white processing, I too like the color version best.  Does anyone else think that the white horse is still too hot in the color?
