This past week we had some great skys that added up to some pretty sunsets and I enjoyed the deep blues in this one. I made this picture last Wednesday evening at a State Natural Area about three miles from my home. It is not the area I usually shoot from and I was having a hard time trying to come up with a comp I liked. Running out of time I finally decided this would have to do. I had wanted to stay up on the bank a little higher to pick up more reflection but just to many things in the way and cluttered the scene. The reflections did start to show as I waited a bit longer and i was finally happy with this view. Larger version included. Thanks for looking and any thoughts. Nick

Gorgeous color Nick!  I really like the soft, elongated patters of the clouds and color in the sky.  The reflection, a great bonus of course.

This works nicely as presented, but that lone trunk/snag on the left is a bit of a distraction for me.  as is the small branches sticking up on the right.  Looks like this is already a slight crop and I like the semi-pano format.  I think there are other crops here as well, but I think you'll find the one or ones you like best.

Beautiful color and sunset.

Lon's comments are pretty much spot-on as usual.  The sunset colors and the reflections are beautiful.  I like the inclusion of the branch in the lower right corner.  But the tree trunk on the left doesn't add to the composition in my opinion, and its reflection doesn't seem to fit into the mostly horizontal lines of the image.  I'd suggest cloning the tree trunk and its reflection out if possible, or a slightly more intimate crop to eliminate this tree trunk and its reflection.  As Lon mentioned, the small branches extending above the horizon on the right are somewhat of a distraction also.  I'm sure that these can be easily cloned out.  With these two easy tweaks, you would have a fine composition, worthy of printing large and framing.

Wow, this is both very peaceful and has a beautiful swath of color, NIck.  I'm chuckling because I had to look twice before that tree sticking up on the right stopped being a powerline support structure.  For me, that trunk on the left fits right perfectly into the marshy environment.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the comments and suggestions. When I first got to this location that night there were two bald eagles sitting in that right tree above the horizon so I guess I just thought it belonged in the scene. Looking at it now I can see why it might be a bit of a distraction and mostly because it kind of looks like a tower or something...even though it isn't. I included the snag on the left because as Mark mentioned it seemed to fit the enviroment to me. I do have a couple of comps without it too that I will go back and look at. As always I really appreciate your thoughts! Nick

Nice, soft colors for this winter sunset, Nick. The sunset is more sublime than grand with all the blue, but sublime works, too, in a peacful feeling way. The far left doesn't add much but it's not a negative either, and I like the semi-pano comp.

Man, you gotta love those deep rich reds and blues in this image and those lighter colored clouds relected in the water are particularly striking, Nick. This just looks like a wonderful peaceful way to end the day IMO. I too would clone out that section of branches sticking up above the horizon line. You have a knack for finding these beautiful scenes close to home.

Thanks guys! Here is a repost with the trees cloned and then I cropped the left side to eliminate the dead tree stump. Probably does work better for most I guess...cool Appreciate the help! Nick   Click on the image for a better view.
I did this version from a different frame shot at the same time. This frame had a little less on the left side and a bit more on the right.

Gorgeous sky and reflection Nick.  Your repost works much better for me.  I though the same as Mark on the branches in the upper right looking like a power line tower.

Love the colors in this scene, Nick.  I think the repost is the ticket.  A bit less stuff to interupt the peaceful image.

Hi Nick,

The scene is very relaxing with the calm mood of the sunset.  Nice work in the repost as that version really works for me, and overall this image works very well for me after a long day. It helps me to unwind, an thanks for the phone number.

I, like Mark Seaver, liked the stump on the left but not so much the stick on the right. But the repost does look better because of its simplicity and directness. I think you did  first rate job in the cropping to bring out a fine composition. It's really superior to the original in every respect except maybe the removal of some of the bottom which brought the light reflections closer to the border.
