Mike and I were driving down Duck Brook Road looking for some intimate comps on a drizzly day when he suddenly told me to back up. I complied as directed until he told me to stop. As we got out of the truck  I noticed right away what he had spotted. Here was this beautiful array of fall color right before us.

I know this might not be everyone's cup of tea, but this turned out to be one of our favorites of the trip.

As always thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment or suggestion.

Ed, One really needs to check out the larger version to get the full effect of this one. I think your composition works very nice and the colors are wonderful. What a nice blend of colors too.

The composition is lovely, and the various colors are excellent. While there is a lot going on, in a good way, I find this to be very peraceful. Nicely done, Ed.

Ed,
Excellent image. The foliage colors really pop and the bright green leaves add a strong visual element. One minor suggestion: I might try toning down the two prominent trunks at the top. I find they have a tendency to pull my eye out of the frame.

Very nice array of colors and shapes, Ed. I especially like the fern on the right. Makes the image for me.

Ed,

I guess I'm gonna have to invoke the Kaleidoscope word again.... what a collection of color, plants/leaves and stages of the seasons.  I can see why this might be a favorite of the trip.  I'm mostly surpised though that someone actually had a successful "drive by" capture.... ya know, it looked awesome driving by at 35mph (or whatever speed,) but when we go back, it's just never the same.  But so glad this one worked out!

The only thing I'm undecided on are the two semi-bright trunks. Not bright like overexposed or anything (they're certainly not,) but perhaps more in their shape and presence. In the end, they work and are important for context and actually for the overall balance, so I'm leaning towards a positive view of the trunks.

Great find, even better capture.

Quite a collection, Ed.  I like the two trunks, although, I might burn them a bit.  The explosion of fall colors is very nice, but I'm with Scott, the ferns make it for me too.

Sweet!  The title says it all.  More and more it's becoming my philosophy that the secret of a great composition, especially with microcosms such as this, is to isolate a scene with the camera in which the innate chaos in nature is reduced, perhaps not to a minimum, but enough to be appealing and interesting.  You have done that very nicely and effectively with this composition.  Even though the image is quite busy, there is enough "organization" (i.e. - reduced chaos) to allow the viewer to appreciate and enjoy all of the elements and aspects of the composition.

Here is a repost with the two tree trunks burned down a little. Thanks for your thoughts.
Lon: I know all to well about drive bys as they usually do look better until you get a little closer inspection of your subject. This is one of the few times I can remember that it did work out.

Ed,

The little burn of the trunks.... perfecto!  It's amazing (and so often so very important) how such subtle changes can make such a difference.  That burn turned those trunks from a slight eye magnet, to an element that is nicely blended in with the rest of the scene.  Great job on the rework.
