PROWLING ....Male Grizzly , seeking mate !  Don't get in his way ! I am sure focused on a mature female grizzly and travelling at an excellent rate along the shoreline , crossing this river quickly and up the bank to deeper grasses. The time was early evening ( 9:30PM) BC Time with low lying, setting sun, giving off that evening glow. He is mostly in shadow with light highlights on his topline. His look is  very obvious , with a focused-look into my lens !      I am always attempting to keep the ISO lowest while still capturing the sense of the scene. The shutter speed  @ 1/500 was sufficient to get almost everything sharp , except the front splashing paw, where obvious motion here gives a feeling of movement.

Nikon D600, Nikon 200-400 VR F4 lens, with Active VR on , -1 Meter compensation, Hand held from a floating zodiac boat , in some waves but wind receding ,  F 6.3, taken @ 310mm, ISO 4000, One pass NR,   taken at 9:32pm BC time . Small crop from top ,

Comments appreciated , I learn something  from comments each time !    \

Bill,

the mood of the image is very nice, the pose and the look of the bear are fantastic. For an ISO 4000 the image looks also quiet good.

Bill: you really don't get an appreciation for the look he's giving you until view it large. The techs and pose are spot on. The strong blue and green foreground/background colors add to the strength of the photo. Richard

The intense expression and raised paw make this capture,IMO.  You are dealing with some pretty bright light here, and the WB difference in light and shade is obvious to my eye.  You did a great job of exposure, retaining highlights on the fur.  I assume you already made some processing tweaks to compensate WB, but I would suggest just a touch of additional selective warming to just the shadow area of the bear (fornt legs and face) which I think would offer a bit of enhancement.  On the cool side of the spectrum,  the blue water is a fine balance to the intense greens in the area you were photographing.

Hello Ken, Cay, ... Great to get your take on this.

Richard,... I know you had similar weather this season in the Khutzeymateen, and worked with the lighting conditions, like myself.

Lon...Yes, the bear was mostly in shadow and cool lighting there, for sure.  I have applied WB but maybe a small amount more on those specifed areas.

Is is a very fine line to adjust for Noise . Getting some NR without sacrficing too much quality.  I've been using PS6 , and feel quite Ok with its overall performance,  to date.

Thanks Guys..... Really appreciate the expert and constructive feedback.

Bill, I am really digging this image. Love the look you got from this one and the extended left paw entering the water. I also think you handled the lighting situation very well. My only tiny nit is I still think there is a lot of noticeable noise, but only on the grass, especially the lighted grass. Have you tried Lightroom's NR? I use it sometimes on a second noise pass because I can use the selection tool to make it very easy to select only the areas I want to further reduce. Great image overall!

The bear looks really good Bill, nice pose, I would run some selective noise reduction on the bg if possible.  If running it on the whole image in LR or in PS be sure to leave the detail high - I leave it at 90 which helps the program focus on the noise in out of focus areas. devil
