This photograph was taken on 10/25/2015, the first full day of my trip to Zion this year. This is the connecting channel between two large, deep waterholes which were filled with water from heavy rain that had fallen about a week earlier. Most of the times that I've been to this location, the waterholes have been bone dry. Not just the obvious patterns in the sand are caused by water flowing through this channel. But of course the patterns in the rock are also carved over time by water rushing down from surrounding higher ground during countless flash flood events over hundreds or probably even thousands of years. (I'm not a geologist.

) The two waterholes are part of a chain of about 8 waterholes (I think, I'm estimating the number, I've never actually counted them) within a short distance of each other coming down from a canyon in the eastern region of the park.

4 commentsnice to see some water in the photo so that one can see that the formation has been created by it. The polarizer has helped to get the ripples at the ground visible, another formation created by the water. Nicely seen.
