Ice Bubble Abstract I

by Dennis Plank

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted January 3, 2016102 views7 comments
I was looking at the frozen bird bath New Year's eve and liked the bubble patterns I saw in it.  The morning of the 1st I took some water out to add to it and smooth out the surface irregularities that give it a hazy look.  This image is a small piece two or three inches wide near the edge where the larger bubbles congregated in a neat looking band.

5D3, 180 mm f3.5 macro, tripod, f/25, 1/4 sec, iso 200, aperture priority, pattern metyering, +1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6 with detail enhancement using Topaz Detail 3.  Cropped slightly for composition.  Taken in my back yard on January 1st at 9:15 AM.

This is a bit outside my normal zone, so I'd really appreciate your input on this and others I'll be posting.

Thanks,

The details in the bubble tracks are way cool, Dennis.  I've seen things like this in my pond and pondered (word chosen deliberately) about the how, but never seen as many bubble tracks.  I really like the warm browns at the bottom and the forest of tracks.  I had ice partly covering my ponds this morning and the forecast calls for colder temps through Wed.  Has me hoping for some ice views like this....

Very cool, Dennis. Terriifc pattern and detail. This looks good as is, and I have no suggestions for improving it, but I am looking forward to seeing the others you'll be posting. devil

Thery are neat patterns, bit I think there's almost too much going on to sort out what ther pattern is.  Mabe a closer comp that would isolate a few of the vertical bubble tracks.  Interesting shot.

Fascinating abstract.  Very interesting patterns, colors, and textures.  This works well.

This is really neat!! Excellent eye to catch this composition. I have no suggestions beyond perhaps adding just a bit of contrast, but it works well as it is too.

Very nice abstract, those bubbles are really interesting! I like how they seem to arise from the light brown part in the background,
