Ice & Frost Abstract

This is a picture I made early this morning while walking along the Wisconsin River. We finally had a little ice and I just wanted to see if I could find anything interesting and fun to photograph. This is one I found interesting and wanted to post it here for any thoughts on it. It was 4 degrees F. this morning but the ice on the river is never really safe to go on so I shot this whilke standing on the bank. It was a fun morning being out. Larger version included.
70-200L @200mm, ISO 400, F/8 and 1/500sec.

Tooting your own horn here, huh, Nick.  The shape sure has me thinking bugle.  Ice shapes are tons of fun.  This one looks good, with a fine shape, lots of texture and flow in the ice and good contrast in the clear areas.  Had some ice here in MD today too, so I was shooting ice abstracts too (just posted one in Macro).

I might try a comp that eliminates most of the black area on the left. Have the focal point be just the other black area and the ovals at its base.

The larger version is a treat, because of all the fine detail. The blue shades are very "elegant". I can't help but think of some science fiction setting, sailing into a nebula or something of the sort. Gorgeous shot!

The lines and shapes in your image are simply beautiful, Nick, as is the bold dark shape in the center.  I might try and crop a bit off the left hand side to try and minimize the dark ice on the left that does seem to detract from the gorgeous design of the ice.  Love the color; just the right touch of blue to give that cold feel to the ice.  Maybe not 4 degrees cold as you experienced, but enough.  Fantastic work as always.

This looks really "cool". The darker areas with the bright spots look like the night sky, creating a unique effect overall, as if the scene shows something photographed with the Hubble space telescope. Really good work!

You did a nice job with this - it indeed is interesting, I'm not too sure about the dark space on the left.

Thanks so much guys! Really appreciate the comments and thoughts. It does make me think of something from outer space and a black hole or something like that.
Mark, Yes, I thought of a bugle right away too and my wife did also.

Such a remarkable structure... The dark "shaft" with its light pointy "axe", and then those two oval forms at the base of the shaft! Really nice find, I like it a lot.

For me the best abstracts are when you don't have the slightest idea what is going on but the image and pattern are really fun to look at.  That is the case here.  I really had to look at this for a while.

I see Mark stole my thunder with the horn reference. cool The shapes and lines are amazing and the light is sublime; perfect for bringing out the textures in the ice. This is beautifully done, Nick.

I think the the central black shape and the ice ae very interesting with the contrast in tones and shape, but I'm not sure about the left black portion. As others have pointed out, maybe a comp without the left black areas would be stronger.  The multiple shades of blue n the ice are very cool,

Nick,

This is fascinating and unique!  The comments reveal how differently we can all see and interpret things.  Mine might be a little more sinister....  I see a trigger guard in the loops and a razor sharp knife like weapon at the other end....  But also, I see the dark background as celestial, like this ice object is floating in space. And so with that, the black on the left works for me - but I can see why it might not for others. It's all how we see an interpret this abstract.

Beautifully processed as well.  I think this is very cool!

Thanks much to all of your for your thoughts on this. I thought it was a pretty interesting subject and had fun shooting and processing it. I can see the black on the left edge not working for some of you and that is certainly understandable to me.
For me the black edge was very important in the comp and I really wanted to include it. I believe like Lon mentioned it is all in how one interprets this abstract. I really do appreciate all of your comments on this! Cheers, Nick

This is an unusual ice image. It does have an intergalactic look to it. I can almost hear the opening theme of the 2001 space odyssey...

I am curious what all that black is. Are we looking at obsidian through ice?

Igor, Thanks! Yes, the black area is a thin coating of ice that we are seeing through to the dark water below. Nick

Good day Nick,

This is a fascinating capture of ice. The most enjoyable aspect of the image for myself are the shapes and colors in the ice. The Dark edge and center weapon like shape add an aggressive edge to this image. The image has an upbeat feel to it, but there is a darkness lying below the surface.

Sweeet vision with such an interesting capture.

Wow!  The little bit of dark at the upper right hand corner sets off the main subject beautifully.
