Some ice formations that I found along the coast during some cold weather. Winter is such a nice season!

8s, f/14, ISO 100, 35 mm, polarizer, 6 stop ND.

C&C welcome, large version is included!

I dunno, Roel, it feels a little static to me for some reason, maybe due to the symmetric presentation. I'm also not sure the sky is doing much here either, other than the hint of color.

I think this is a case where I might have zoomed in to the space between the two ice formations as a focus, maybe including all of the one on the left while excluding the sky. Be interested to hear what others think.

Roel,
Very interesting and unique pieces of floating ice you've captured. After viewing for some time, I can see Dave E's point on it feeling a bit static. I think this is partly due to the fact that the sky does not hold a lot of interest. I would be tempted to crop a bit off the sky which i think would make the image more dynamic and bring more focus on the ice formations.

Roel,

I like this, and the large version makes a difference here (of course it almost always does - goes without saying...)  What I find interesting is that I'm assuming these are rocks covered with the ice?  I don't know why it would make a difference, but if I think of these as just icebergs, it is more of a static image.  Ok, it's still a bit static, but I find it fascinating at the same time.

The texture in the water really comes through in the large view too.  The colors and light are beautiful as well.  You could experiment with cropping just a little sky, but the pinks and the long cloud look good.

Interesting image, Roel. I think the light is very nice, including the subtle reflection in the water, and both ice formations have interesting shape and detail. I'll second (actually, third) the comments about the sky. I actually find this more interesting with no sky, so maybe cropping about 1/2 the sky is a good compromise.

This is an interesting image, Roel, and holds my attention.  I like the shutter speed, flattening out the sea and providing  bit of a mist and some subtle colors. Good details on the shadow side of the ice rocks, but can you take down any highlights to get more detail from the sunlit side?

This is absolutely lovely, Roel - the light on those ice formations is simply perfect, and one of those "once in a season" finds. The composition works really well for me, and the sky colors are gorgeous. Nicely done! And I agree about winter cool

Thanks for the comments and honesty everyone, much appreciated! I looked into cropping the sky, but that didn't work for me, so in stead I added some contrast to especially the sky. Hopefully that will improve matters, since I like the subtle colors and the vague clouds. I also burned the highlights a bit as per Stephen's suggestion.

Lon, yes, those are rocks covered with ice. It was pretty cold (-20 deg Celsius/-4 deg Fahrenheit), so a lot of the water froze on the rocks that were scattered around the coast. Not solid enough at some places though, I sank knee deep through the ice when looking for a comp, haha. But I saw that coming, so I was prepared for it.

Winter is indeed a nice time Alberto, although autumn still is my favorite. Summer on the other hand we could skip altogether if you ask me, absolutely hate the warmth and the mosquitoes feasting on my precious blood.

Roel,

The repost is excellent!  Amazing how seemingly minor tweaks can make such a difference in an image.  Kudos for the extra time and detail.

I agree with David's opinion that the image is a bit static but I think what carries it is the lighting and texture of the ice. It feels like shaving cream or salt, but not ice. So I think that's intriguing because you're not representing something in the manner the viewer expects. The only suggestion that I can add which nobody has mentioned is that blip of an island in the back. It's not clear that it's land and just makes the horizon look uneven. Just my feelings.

Bizarre ice forms and beautiful lighting.  Simple and elegant shot.  Like the effect of the ND, definitely helped set the mood.

Roel, I'm very much enjoying this view.  There's a fine quiet, peaceful feeling the icey rocks and the early/late light.  You've got a fine collection of subtle colors throughout the image.  The repost does add considerable "pop".  There's some blurring along the bright sides of the ice that bothered me in the original but is nicely improved in the repost.  Might be worth tone down those brightest areas just a bit more.

I don't find this static at all. I like how these two nicely lit objects stand as monuments in the blurry water. A very interesting, yes fascinating image for me.
There is something on the horizon, left (above that smaller ice sculpture), which I find just a tad distracting - it is too small to add (e.g. providing landscape context such as mountain range), but too big to go unnoticed. I would not hesitate to clone it, if it were mine. I do like the layer of clouds on the right side, however.

Roel, I liked the original just as it was, the added contrast in the sky does not bother me, but it works equally well in the original version. Whether or not the composition is "static", it works for me !
