I'm Falling

I spent much of yesterday trying to catch water drops falling from the icicles hanging from our roof.  The hardest part besides catching a drop just as it was released was getting the drop in focus since I was shooting up at the icicles.  I needed a 3 foot high platform to work from.  (7D2, 180mm macro, 1/2500, f/16, iso 3200, tripod, 80% ff)

What a fabulous "catch," Mark. Major kudos on getting the shot. Excellent detail in the drop, including the great sunstar. devildevil

This is really cool, Mark!  Great capture to get both the large drop and the tiny one right under the icicle.  I also like the reflection in the drops and I like the sunstars.

Excellent, Mark! This has been on my to-do-list, but haven't done it yet. The sun stars are looking very good and the placement of the drop and the icicle is spot on.

At first I wondered why the top of the drop is more blurred than the bottom, but I realize that this is just after the drop is "released" from the icicle, which would result in the top part of the drop temporarily having a higher velocity than the lower part. Very interesting to see!

Looks like a fun project.  I really like this image but it never gets cold enough here to get icicles.  Keep safe, I hear more snow is on the way...

Mark, I like the suntars in the icicle and the reflection in the big drop. Congrats on this shot! You got both the DOF and the speed.

Perseverance paid off, Mark.  You managed to catch the moment very nicely.  The tiny secondary drop adds a lot of interest for me.  I'm not sure about the lighting.  I like the sun star on the drop, but all the highlights on the icicle itself seem a bit too much.

It is only a matter of timing :) Great catch, especially with the small droplet. I guess the slight unsharpness of the drop is caused by the drop being closer than the icicle. At 1/2500 it is hard to imagine that its velocity causes unsharpness. Anyway great shot. You must have had a lot of patience and perseverance.
