Cattle Egret
by Dennis Plank
We saw these all over Oahu. I thought perhaps they'd found their own way to the islands, but the Hawaiian bird book we have indicates that they were imported in 1959 "to control insect pests". They didn't mention whether it worked or not. This shot was taken at the Moanalua Gardens near Honolulu which is a 24 acre private garden and ex-residence of one of King Kamehameha V before he took the throne. It's main draw is a large monkey pod tree that's the focus of Hitachi's advertising. It has several others that you can visit in peace as well as the large fish pond where I found this bird.
