Snow Fox

Hi Everyone! Here's another picture of one of the young fox kits we found this spring in Waterton Lakes National Park. The night we first found them it ended up snowing, so Jenaya, my dad and I couldn't wait to get up in the morning and see if we could catch one in the snow. We got all set up and waited and waited for a kit to come out. I almost gave up but then all of the sudden this guy popped out to check out the snow. It was really cute watching him figure out walking in the snow!

I hope you like this one!

Nikon D7100
NikkorAF-S 300mm f/4D IF-ED with TC-14EII teleconverter
ISO 500
1/1000sec @ f/5.6
+1 stop exposure compensation
Mounted on Gitzo tripod with Acratech GV2 ballhead
Full frame

NOTE FROM DAD: This one is pretty much exactly as recorded (RAW) with minimal adjustments to colour temperature and contrast plus a very light selective curves adjustment, not cropped. Josiah absolutely nailed the exposure on this shot while I went slightly under to hold detail in the snow and had to brighten mine...got showed up by my son on this one!

Really nice Josiah. Cuteness off the charts. I like that there is some snow texture around the young fox to give the image some context. Great capture.

I think it's interesting seeing such a young kit in a snowy environment like this.  A pretty rare combination for a photo op.  Looks great to me.

This is off the charts for cuteness. It also well composed, and I like that the head is very sharp while the rest of the body is not as sharp. There is a dark object in the snow to the left of the kit's head that could be removed.  Excellent.

Wow, I've never seen a fox kit in the snow.  Excellent shot.

Josiah this is uber cute...really cool among the falling snow.
I would have liked a tad more space on the right given the direction of his gaze, and less on the left?

Very high on the cuteness scale, but also just an excellent shot...all your patient waiting paid off. Good job on getting the right exposure for this little guy and surrounding snow.

Hi Josiah,

Super cute fox kit!  I too like very narrow depth of field; producing a very sharp face with the rest of the fox a bit OOF.  Well done!

Man, you sure nailed this VERY momentary opportunity, Josiah! Perfect focus, perfect exposure, and very, very good composition! I have to confess I never thought of Morkel's suggested shift of placing the fox to the left, but if I remember the den site well enough I think you would have had some dark shadows come in on the right then which would have decidedly lowered the impact of the image IMO. Just a great wildlife image! Your patience and your dedication to learning your craft definitely paid off here!

This is a gorgeous shot, Josiah! Your subject obviously had a high cute factor, but the photo is technically very well executed as well. Beautiful! devil

Hi Josiah,

Definitely a cutie! Nicely captured - I quite like the implied "fragility" (saying that the poor little guy is cold!) of the shot - that's nicely conveyed.

I think those commenting on never seeing a fox kit in snow probably haven't spent much time in Alberta! In the 30 years I lived in Calgary there wasn't ONE month of the year where I didn't seen snow at least once! enlightened

Cheers...

Brad
