Elephant Expanse
by Morkel Erasmus
As many of you know by now, I love a good "animalscape".
I tend not to limit myself to which focal length is needed to capture a good "animalscape", but I do like employing the wide angle lens and trying to merge the landscape photographer and wildlife photographer in me...
The plains of the Mara always invite me to whip out the wide angle perspective.
A gloomy overcast afternoon and some cooperative elephants, coupled with a well-placed inselberg, made this shot come to life.

7 commentsWhilst the clouds are nice I feel the positioning of the Elephants looks wrong, they needed to be looking the other way?

You know I'm a fan of the 'scapes as well - so by default I like this. I like the somewhat extreme positioning of the subjects (at the very bottom of the frame) - combine that with the dominance of the sky (visually) and the subjects almost become a good "find" in the shot. I agree with Max on the balance provided by the butte. Tonally the non-sky part of the image seems a bit flat...I'd almost like to see a LITTLE more dark-on-dark detail on the elephants. But overall very nicely done...
Cheers...

Brad - good suggestion, I will certainly play around...
