Leap Day

Happy Leap Day, everyone.

I just returned from my winter trip in Yellowstone.  As mentioned in my last post from the park, the fox action was crazy this month.  It got even better when I took my tour group into the park interior, where we had six or seven foxes during our visits to Hayden Valley.

This is the female in a courting pair we spotted during our final day in the interior.  She was being stalked by a male, but took time out to do a little hunting during the courtship proceedings.  This is not the full mousing leap so many photographers strive to capture.  It was more of a half-hearted jump.  But the deep snow in Hayden meant we didn't have to deal with any interfering sagebrush, and as a result, it's probably the "cleanest" mousing sequence anyone in the group (including myself) had captured to date.

Fantastic, Max! Love it! And very jealous of your fox experiences but very happy for you...you've certainly put the time in for it to all come together for you!

Congratulations!  The only ones we saw in Hayden were way out there.  Half-hearted or not, it still shows how they do it.

I have watched this with foxes and coyotes but never with a camera in hand or close enough. Great capture.

Love the simplicity of scene, Max! Of course, great action also.

Cheers,

Hisham.

Hi Max,

I agree with the others - this one is great (and very appropriate for the 29th of Feb!). I like the smooth arch of the back and tail, and the coat detail (as much as one can tell from such the "standard" size) looks very nice as well. Love the stark ("clean") foreground and background as well.

Nicely done - thanks for sharing this one...
