According to the announcement the best time to photograph the blood moon in central Illinois was at 6:45 am.  This photo was taken at 6:48 am.  Light clouds kept sliding over the moon.

The blues and orange work so well together in this comp.  The dark tree shapes give it a slightly spooky atmosphere, like spider legs crawling into the view. Maybe wish the moon were a little sharper, looks a little soft on the large version.  In this case, the mood and comp. trumps a slightly soft moon, creative shot.

I agree with everything Harry said. I also notice some of the branches are quite out of focus. Looks like you had near and far branches. For me, I wish all the branches were in focus or at least close. Very creative.

I also agree with Harry's comments about the colors an trees, although the oof tree in the foreground is a bit too much out of focus for me. But no big deal.

John,

I think this is nicely executed.  Love the color and this really captures the "blood" moon very well.

For me, the oof branches up top are only mildly distracting.  The are sufficiently out of focus though that the intent is clear; meaning you're not going for full front to back depth here.  My only suggestion though to help with that somewhat would be a crop from the right of about 1/4 of the frame.  The tree mass in the LR isn't adding to the frame and by cropping off the right you eliminate at least some of the oof branches.

I do really enjoy the moon being partially behind the tree. That really helps make the image work.

The colors work well together. Nice timing on this capture. The branches really add some interest and depth to the photo.
Nice job.

I like this image a lot and would agree with Lon's suggestion to crop some off the right so that the moon isn't dead center. Lovely colors and effect.

Beautiful shot - we had clouds here so no chance of me getting the moon, but had nice photos the previous evenings.  I like how the trees add a sense of place and scale - once you take a "lone moon" photo, they're all the same after!
