Distant Pillars (BW)

Dear all,

This is in response to my recently posted shot "Distant Pillars", where large differences in color temperatures between the foreground and background made it difficult to find a pleasing color balance. This is a different version of the same scene, and also processed in monochrome with some split toning applied. Please let me know what you think!

Thanks!

Really like this rendition Basil. A couple of processing suggestion that may improve things, but again just my vision so take with a grain of salt.  Might try and darken the right snowfields to a similar tone as the left fields. Slightly brighten the center rock face that is getting the nice light, maybe closer in brightness to the left rock face that is lit up.  Lastly maybe brightening the high center cloud a little to mirror the brightness of the cloud to the far right.  There is an uplifting feel to the image with the lighting, and I think having that cloud more illuminated might help convey that feeling.  Super picky stuff, but may be worth seeing how these adjustments work for you.  A wonderful, fine art feel to the shot and processing.devildevil

Really nice, Basil.  Quite a dramatic image.  I think Harry has some great suggestions and I would add some attention to the halos on the left and right ridges before printing.  Beautiful work.

I'll let you know what I think: winner!! This is a really great monotone, love the atmosphere of it. Harry mentioned some nice suggestions, although this already works as is for me as well.

Basil, the sharpness and contrast make it striking even as a thumb.  Those hazy middle ground peaks with the clouds really stand out.  Your b&w processing looks great.  Yes, I too could see evening out the tones in the foreground snow fields, but this is outstanding as presented.  I like the expansiveness of this view relative to the vertical view of the previous post.

Hi Basil, great shot and great processing - I think the split toning really works here - I agree on the whole with Harry's comments, for me the left / right foreground though is the most important, others very much personal taste ;-) ...

This is a real beauty. Very dramatic and moody image. Monochromatic rendering works well.

The the areas of ethereal glowing light contrasting with shadowed parts are what makes the shot for me. Looks like a wonderful area to photograph.

This is really striking, Basil.  Such grace and yet what magnitude on display here.  Love the dark, soft atmosphere.

A great B&W, I like the light entering in what it seems to be a valley. The large one is a must to see for the details of the mountains. A big Bravo for me!
