Evening at Grand Marais

by Nick Bristol

I made this picture in the harbor at Grand Marais, Minnesota. It is on the north shore of Lake Superior and a wonderful small town. This evening was wonderfully quiet and peaceful and I enjoyed every minute of it. I made the picture awhile after sunset and was happy that it seemed to capture the mood of that evening. The Sawtooth Mountains are in the background.
Larger version included for much better look. Canon, 24-105L @ 40mm, ISO 100, F/20 and 8 second exposure.

Peaceful harbor scene...surprised the boats weren't rocking more in the 8 second exposure. Love the pink and blue, plus the satiny look of the water. The light makes this one special.

A peaceful beauty, Nick.  The details and the light show much better in the large view. I like how the dock leads in from the left and then the mountains swing back left into the distance as they fade.  It sure looks like a "great big sigh", evening.  I am thinking that a subtle reduction in the blues might be good.

Ed, Kathy, Mark and Kah, Thanks so much for your comments on this.
Kathy, Yes, I was happy to see the boats stayed as still as they did during the longer exposure. It was quite calm and being right behind the break helped out a lot I think. I did shoot a couple of shots at a higher ISO and at F/11 but this one was much more appealing to me. Thanks.

It does indeed capture the mood very well, the colors and tones are just perfect, in my view.

Nick, your image conveys the atmosphere of this evening scene wonderfully to me. I appreciate your careful treatment of colors a lot.

This has such a mellow and quiet mood, Nick. The pinks in the sky balance nicely with the cool blues, and I like the smooth water. Nicely done!
