Monterey Jelly

Well, Purple-striped jellyfish from the Monterey Bay aquarium.  Wife and I spent a couple of days in Monterey and visited the always popular (and crowded) aquarium.  This was really the first time I've had the chance to just carry around my D810E for fun, and yes, still getting used to everything.

Most of the images I took sucked, but a few came out and were worth processing.  The jellyfish exhibit is very popular of course and pictures like this are a dime a dozen.  But I had fun anyway - because I could.  What I was most impressed with was the raw file.  This was shot at iso 3200, f/4.5 and 1/30s.  Not your best combo for detailed images of moving things.  The image is a little soft given it's handheld at 1/30s and poor lens performance wide open.  but the noise was surprisingly minimal.  I also had a chance to play with noise reduction in both ACR and the new NIK filters.  I'm happy with the results here, although some liberties on color/saturation.

Anyway, would love your thoughts.  BTW, you can see the webcam of these guys direct from the aquarium.

Thanks!

Lon

Nicely done, Lon. The gold on blue colors are really eye-catching, and the detail is excellent.

Lon: the bold colors and the saturation work for me. Having tried the same shots a few years ago, I appreciate the level of difficulty in obtaining a good photo. Nicely done. Richard

Real nice. I like the bold colors and the almost abstract subject matter, with the odds shapes.

The richness of the colouring is the attraction undoubtedly, Lon.  The balance of your composition also works well, giving a sense of jostling and movement.   Would not have dreamt this was shot at f 4.5 - and darned good holding of the camera too !

I like this, Lon. The bold blue against the translucent creatures is really nice, and I like the abstractness. You did a fine job processing this.

I've never been able to get very good images, since they don't allow flashes or - I think - even tripods now.
Excellent colour, detail, and placement of the jellies.

congrats on the EP!

These jellyfish are amazing; my grandkids are mesmerized by their movement, as am I.  A beautiful capture and the colors are exquisite.
