Squawk!

I caught several frames of this Great Blue Heron as it flew by the boat, but it only had its bill open in this one.  I really think the view of the tongue is cool as I've never seen it this clearly before, though part of it is still hidden.  I had a hard time level in this image as the edge of the water isn't really level.  I started out leveling it, but then the Heron was falling out of the sky.  Finally I compromised by drawing a line from the tip of the feet to the eye and using that as my level-pretty arbitrary.  One of these days they'll put the built-in level info from the camera in EXIF and let us do it properly.

7D2, Sigma 150-600 C @ 468 mm, handheld from boat, f/8, 1/4000, iso 800, manual exposure.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 13.7 MP before resizing (mostly for straightening, but I took some extra off the left and bottom).  Taken at 6:01 PM on March 22nd at a small mixed rookery on an island of the St Johns river.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Nice bird in flight shot.  It looks as if he has his eye on something below and is ready to pounce.

The open beak is a definite plus.  This is a perfect position for a broadside flight shot.  Nicely done.

Apt title Dennis, and nice flight shot.  Good to catch them in mid-squawk!

Nice action that you have captured here. I have always been amazed at how the heron tucks his neck back against his body to reduce drag and make a more aerodynamic form. Mother Nature at her best. Well done.

Nice flight image Dennis. I especially like the open beak in this one.
