Horsetail is one of the more challenging waterfalls to reach in the Columbia River Gorge. While you can shoot it from your car, you have to actually get out if you want this perspective.

Seriously though, the real challenges are the crowds and traffic. To beat that, I took this image early in the morning, so that I could shoot from the bridge without dodging cars. I had the luxury of the scene to myself.

I don't normally shoot at this high of an ISO, but with the dim lighting the wind this waterfall whips up made controlling motion a chore.

Since this waterfall is photographed almost as often as Multnomah, I mixed it up a little by going for a painterly effect in the processing.

Here's the jpg taken at the same time as the raw. It looks really dark here with the white background; it's better if you click on it to view on a darker one.

Pretty little waterfall scene. I might remove  a little cyan, but pretty dang minor.  Too bad you had to get all the way out of your car to make this image though. sad

Nice scene John. The large version seems to be a bit darker than the 720 version. Perhaps the white border gives that impression. My only suggestion would be to lighten up the stream a bit so that we can better differentiate the rocks below.

This looks like a really difficult exposure and lighting situation but I think you've managed to pull it off fairly well considering. The painterly effect helps here as a result. My only nit would be your horizon appears to be slightly off.

Well done.  Nice portrait of Horsetail - you definitely wouldn't know that it's right from the highway.  The green seems a little cool for me.

It's a fine, tight look at this falls, John.  The beautiful variety of greens around it are great.  I'm thinking that cropping about half off the bottom would provide even more emphasis on the falls and the angled slopes beside it.  You're jpg really illustrates the value of shooting raw and adding sophisticated processing.

This is very nice, John.  I like the painterly effect of your always spot on processing.  Love it.

John,

Lovely waterfall scenic.  The colors are beautiful. I especially like the grouping of trees on the right and the rock, mosses and greens on the left, and how they frame the waterfall.

The only suggestions I have would be to burn slightly, or desaturate slightly the greenery in the ULC; not that it's off by much, but more because it pulls the eye to that corner. minor though.  the other suggestion is a slight crop off the bottom.  I do understand the flow of the vertical with the creek and outflow, but for me, the beauty and strength of the image is the upper 2/3 - 3/4.

This is gorgeous. Your processing is superb. I'm loving the fresh, bright greens displayed under the soft light. Very nice work!

Very nice scene with those lush greens. I think I would dodge the lower half a bit, but that is a minor nit. Well worth getting out of your car for!

Love that painterly processing. Might be an optical illusion, but this is one of those scenes that just feels tilted (counterclockwise).
I understand why you wanted to include the stream on the bottom -- I like to see that flow not getting cut off.  However, I keep wondering what's on the left; if it is as lovely as the rest of the scene, I'd like to see a wider composition, with the falls shooting from the right, going into the scene.  Wonderful light -- Those late-sleepers don't know what they are missing.

Lovely scene and lively color. I agree with Harley about reducing the cyan a bit, and with Lon about the upper left corner and the crop suggestion. This looks real nice despite the high ISO. Good job!

John, this is the best composition of Horsetail Falls that I've ever seen. Well done! (I just may have to poach this shot, with credit to you of course). devil
