Great Blue Herons

A shot from the rookeries off of Rockport, TX.  A little bit late for Mother's Day, taken from a customized photography boat. This is cropped just a bit, I often try to shoot tight in these rookeries to avoid other birds getting into the frame.

Really cool image Nate. It may a bit tight but it portrays the scene perfectly. Detail in the large image is great. I like how the third little GBH is hiding behind the other young one. I don't know whether the yellow flower will be seen as a distraction or not, it will be interesting to see. It doesn't, bother me. It adds a pop of color. Nice work!  devil

Nice image Nate.  Really good detail and I like the interaction between the juvenile and parent.  Personally, I would like to see more space left and right, but from what you said, the sides may be full of distracting clutter.

The flower--it is such a strong visual element, that I find my eye immediately focusing on it first instead of the main subjects.
5/12/16--I've been looking at this and the flower for three days now, and I have to admit that I'd miss the flower it if it were gone. cool

A wonderful family portrait you captured of this pair Nate! Nice light, excellent exposure work. I think the tight composition gives a more intimate feel to the image. I like the flower!

Hey Nate,
If there are any mothers in this world that are under appreciated it has to be the GBH moms. It is dangerous work caring for and especially feeding these rather large chicks. This capture seems to be one of the few better behaving moments in the nest. I know what you mean with trying to get a shot at a rookery without other birds cluttering up the frame.
Its always better by boat . . .  devil

This tells a nice story, Nate.  It's nice interaction.  And I like the touch of yellow flower in the background.  It adds class.

And the little one is hiding a flower for mom...  I'm always impressed when more than one bird is in sharp focus.  The light and colors here are very nice.

I really like the interaction Nate. Makes me want to get out to shoot the rookery here soon. I am sure the chicks are starting to get big. I agree with you about shooting tight in these rookeries, but I am wishing you had a touch more room on bottom.

Intimate and charming. And a Mother's Day flower, too!
