Arch View

I was planning on photographing the Eastern Sierra spring bloom at sunrise but awoke to gale force winds. So looking for something static and cemented to the ground, I decided to shoot this well-known arch. I choose a mid-range focal length to try and maintain the prominence of Lone Pine Peak in the background. I have shot sunrise here on several occasions but this was the best light I've experienced. Comments & critiques appreciated. Thanks

Oh this is gorgeous framing, Dave! The light hitting the peaks really draws the eye into a vortex. Great stuff! Minor minor nit. I might be tempted to clone out the clouds on the URC. They seem to pull the eye away.

Sweet stuff, Dave. The light on Lone Pine Peak is absolutely gorgeous. This worked out to be a great Plan B. No nits from me.

Real nice take on this famous spot. Fine light on the peak.

Years ago, I went there early one morning and the wind was howling. Signs were being torn off in Lone Pine, big rigs were going over and even one of those huge metal electrical line towers went over. It sure can blow in the Owens Valley.

A very neat view Dave.  Not being from USA I don't really know where it is but I think I have seen the Arch before.  Never seen a shot of it quite like this though and I like it very much.

Nice work here, Dave. The light is fabulous, and the textural details in the large version are a treat.

Good choice to shoot rocks, Dave.  We were nearly blown off the road in our motorhome near here. This is excellent.  Love the arch framing the peaks and the light is sweet.  No nits from me.  Really nice work.

Beautiful work, Dave. The trick is to have the shadows look like shadows and yet have enough information to make the viewer want to explore them. And you've done that really well, even preserving the colors in those areas. One thing I would do is explore adding just a bit more contrast to the distant rocks in the arch to see if there could be more tonal separation from the arch itself. But perhaps you've done that as much as you could already.

I sure like the idea of this image and your take on the scene. I looked at it for a little while and here is something I might try to get another look. I might try a more pano look by cropping out some of the rock at the bottom and putting a little more emphasis on the mountains and light in the background. I find my eye being attracted to the mountains and stopped by the mass of rock. Just my opinion and I guess that is all I am qualified to give.

Great widescreen tv you got there! For me personally, I think I would crop out the rock on the left entering the frame, making the window more simplistic. But this is absoluetly great as is!

A fine view through the arch with the distant peaks lit, Dave.  You've got plenty of texture in both the arch rocks and the sunlit peaks as well as a fine sky.  It seems like there is some haloing along the top of the arch, but that could well be the sky brightness.

One of the best renditions of this arch I've ever seen, Dave. I thought I might be seeing the haloing that Mark mentioned although I think it could be dealt with by just darkening the brighter spot in the left crook. Even though it could be just a bit of cloud and not a halo, I would still try to address it.

Wonderful shot of this iconic place, with the moment of light on the distant peaks so nicely framed by all the warm granite. The large view is spectacular. Colors and comp are perfect!

Very nice rendition of what I presume is the Mobius Arch. The light is just about perfect and the processing seems spot on to me.

So nice to catch the background lit up like that Dave. Beautiful color in this too.

Whoa, one of the better "arch window" images I've seen in quite some time!  This is a well executed image with plenty of eye catching details.
