Rufous Hummingbirds

They do like to squabble.  In this case over a perch at the opposite end of the garden from hte feeders.  I just happened to decide to focus on the perched one when another came in to contend for the perch.  Not the sharpest image in my portfolio, but I liked the relative poses and the action.

7D2, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, Wimberley Sidekick on Z1 Ballhead on RRS legs, f/9, 1/160, iso 1000, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped from a horizontal original with just a tiny bit off the top to remove bad alignment of the crop.  Taken at 6:04 AM on May 24th.  There was no direct sun at that time, hence the low shutter speed.

Comments and criticisms are most appreciated.

Thanks,

I really like this, Dennis.  This is one of the few hummer interactions I have seen posted.  You have a very nice composition here with a great background. I especially love the open feet of the intruder--ready to grab hold of something.  It is a shame the light was so flat.  I think some hard shadows would have added to the sense of conflict.  Still, a great image though.

I really like tis.  It shows the competitive life of the Hummers.  The techs are excellent to my eye.  Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful!  I love how still the perched bird is - contrasted with the motion of the other bird

Dennis, this is superb interaction.  Like you say not sharp, but that's part of its appeal, emphasizing the motion.  You should be proud of this one.

One doesn't get this opportunity often and ready for it.  Good job on this interactive image Dennis.

The action makes this image. The perch and background are also very nice. Well done.

Great interaction capture, Dennis. I like the contrast between the motion in the upper bird and the stillness of the lower bird. A difficult depth of field challenge with relatively dim light; you got a good compromise but neither bird is likely quite as sharp as you'd like.

Nice job catching this action Dennis. It sure tells the story of what's happening. BG looks great and the comp works well too.

Dennis,
I like the comp and the background- the interaction between the birds is nicely captured, and the image offers a telling story.
