Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)

Place: Phoenix, AZ backyard
Date: March 28, 2005, 2:24 pm
Equipment: Nikon D70, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), tripod
Exposure: ISO 400, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/160th @ f/8
Raw, PSE 3 on a PowerMac G4, Full frame

I’ve been consumed by other priorities again, and with the temps now firmly in the triple digits (118 forecast for today) I’m not getting out at all.

This is an oldie I never posted, processed back in the days of Photoshop Elements 3. I tweaked the psd file slightly in PS CC 2015 and embedded a color profile.

This was my first digital camera, with a meager 6MP sensor. My 300/2.8 was already 7 years old, and that’s the same lens I’m still relying on today for most of my avian shots.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Large image provided.

Other priorities are such a pain.  A nice shot of this dove, Richard.  It's interesting to see how your photography has evolved in the last 11 years, and not just in cameras.  I don't think you'd frame it quite so tightly today and your focus would be on the eye instead of the body.  Still a very sweet shot of a Mourning Dove that shows off its plumage beautifully.

No need to apologize for the equipment Richard, this is a very nice image.  The color rendition is excellent, and it is very sharp.  It would be nice if you had just a tad more headroom and left side space, but often with a fixed FL one has to get the shot as presented.  I think you framed the bird perfectly given the subject distance.  That is one huge Dove!

Great shot of this Mourning Dove with excellent detail in the feathers. The light and color are very nice too.  My only nit is that the focus was on the body instead of the eye, but still a great image as is.

Nice focus on the mourning dove Richard. Seems a bit large and centered in the frame, and a bit busy in the BG. I do like the detail int he feathers, the colors and the log.

Nice image Richard. The feather detail is very sharp and the dove maybe a little tight in the frame. 118 today - Stay inside!!!  Nice work!

Nice calming image.  I still have my D70 and have posted quite a few shots on this site taken with it.  It still does a fine job od taking clean photos.

An excellent look at the dove, Richard. Your tight framing allows better viewing of the details in the plumage, especially in the larger view. The perch also has some interesting features. The older equipment can still produce great images as you have shown. I sometimes go through some of the older images in this forum and am awed by them.
