Union Bay Sunrise

This is a sunrise picture I made a little over a week ago while in Upper Michigan. I camped with my tent in the Union Bay campground which is right on Lake Superior and also in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area. It was only a short walk from my tent to this spot and just a wonderful morning to be along the lake. I used 3 stop and 2 stop GND filters stacked together for this shot. Already wishing I was back up there!
Canon 5D3, 16-35 F/4 L @16, ISO 100, F/16,1/13 sec. with gnd filters.

A fine capture. Love the graphic nature of the foreground rocks. One small nit- to my eye there is a slight cw til to he horizondevil

Hi Michael, Thanks! I liked the foreground rock too. I did do a little ccw rotation on the larger version but I did not do it on the smaller one. So larger view should be level I think.

Just about as sweet as can be, Nick.  Love this one, the fore rocks are a perfect lead in to this amazing sun rise.  No nits from me at all. Gorgeous in every way!!!!!!!!!

Gorgeous Nick, might like a bit slower SS for the water, but with stacked grads already, probably not doable..
colors are really nice.

I ditto all of the comments made. Just a beautiful sunrise and a great composition. I do agree with Dan that a slower SS would add to the water, but you probably couldn't get it any slower. Great image.

This is a beauty, Nick. Choice of foreground works great, providing a great leading line into the image. Well done.

Hi Nick, this is a wonderful capture of a wonderful scene to my eye! I especially appreciate the colors in the foreground rocks and the way these rocks anchor and frame the image. The calm water at the bottom adds a lot in my opinion. You convey the atmosphere immediately to me.

Thinking about shutter speed I asked myself whether a shorter one might be interesting too - maybe the ripples of the water surface would then show more crispness similar to the surface of the rocks.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate getting your thoughts. I agree that longer exposure and shorter exposure may both have worked very well. I'm going to take a look at some of the other shots from that morning and see what I have. Cheers, Nick

I am jealous of the view from your tent, Nick. We should all be so lucky. cool The morning light is fantastic as are the diagonals and textures in the rocky shoreline. Beautifully done.

Sweet, Nick. Excellent comp is wonderful light. As I've commented repeatedly upon seeing your images, I need to get up there.  Union Bay is now on my camping list. Just wish it was a bit closer. It's a long way to the UP. cheeky

Amazing colors, compositions, lines, and balance with this picture. This makes me want to pack my tent and head up that way because there's nothing like that down here. Absolutely beautiful.

What a beautiful scene to wake up to!  I like the just about everything in this image and nice job of handling the light with the filters.  Good to see you have some sunrise clouds for an added extra element, nice job in getting this, way to go.

Beautiful light and sweet little scene. You already took care of the rotation and that was my only nit. Very nice!

Beautiful sunrise picture, Nick. What impresses me the most is the amount of detail in the image in the area in close proximity to the 'orb'. I tend to get an indistinguishable yellow shape around the sun, as do most digital photographers that aren't going for the star effect. Ian Cameron seems to be the exception. Would love to know how you did it. There is some literature of hiding the sun with a thumb in one of the shots and use it in a composite but haven't tried that yet.

The glow from the sun getting weaker with distance is really nice as are the right amount of clouds. I like that this is not a dramatic sunrise actually, with the sky lit up with red clouds. I think it would have been nice to have the distant waves sharper but I suppose the gnd filters forced you to use a longer SS.

Igor, Thanks much for your thoughts on this one. I didn't do anything special on this other than using the two grad filters so I guess that is what helped out with the sun. I know Ian uses grad filters quite a bit too. It was also diffused some by the thin cloud layer on the horizon which helped out. I haven't tried the thumb thing yet either but I think it works really well from what I have seen. I too wish the waves were a little sharper in the distance. I should have tried a higher ISO but honestly didn't consider it at the time. Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Nick
