Lake Superior Sunrise

This is another sunrise picture I made on Lake Superior. I decided to try this one in black and white and now I'm actually thinking about printing it for my studio and a couple of galleries. Thanks for taking a look. Larger version included.

A beautiful classic B&W. Sweet sunrise and the processing looks spot on. I suspect the bright areas in the sky will bother some, but looks good to me.

Hi Harley, Thanks much! Yes, I thought about that too and was just doing one with a bit less brightness around the sun when you left your comment. I liked it fine too but others might prefer this one. Thank you, Nick

The original looked just fine to me, Nick.   Beautiful black/white.  Certainly worthy of many large prints.  Love it.

Thanks Gary! I'm going to print it tomorrow at 20 x 30 to start with, then I'll use a single white mat and a simple black wood frame. I will have it in my studio this year for the S.W. WI. Fall Art Tour and looking forward to that. Nick

Exceptional image with bold tones and contrast!  The B&W works well, but I am curious about the color image.

Very, very dramatic, Nick. As much as I like the beautiful sunrays and clouds, I like the look of the water even more. It conveys a sense of energy. As for the comp, even though it breaks rules (50/50 and centered sun), it works beautifully. devil

Excellent B&W. The texture in the swirling water in the lower half makes it for me. I don't think you could improve the drama in that water with color. The sun centered is right for this composition. I think I prefer the original over the repost, but the difference is so small that it seems to make little difference except that a 'rule' about not having anything pure white is being broken. I can see why you would want to print this. There is a lot of turmoil in this scene.

Did you use a 24mm prime lens or a zoom set at 24mm?

The first one looks fine (in fact I prefer it).
I might have de-centered the sun a bit?

Thanks guys!
Igor, I used my 24-105L at 24mm. My only prime right now (or at least ones that I use is the Ziess 18mm. It's a beauty in my opinion with only manual focus. it is so smooth and great with live view where you can zoom in on where you want to focus and really fine tune it. Take care, Nick

Superb range of tones, Nick, and an incredible composition.  Especially love the play of light on the water;  seems so tangible, even 3 dimensional, better seen in the larger image.  Exquisite image.  Will make an amazing print.

Strong and dynamic image. I really like the comp. with the centered sun and darker rendering works great to amplify the mood. Well done!

Outstanding. It will look super with the white mat and black frame just as it does here. I just love the texture and detail in the water.

I like the dark tonal qualities in this image and the contrast really works well. It especially looks nice on my monitor as a large detailed image.
