I was out getting a feel for my new 7D Mk II.
It was a nice surprise to find this Black Swallowtail Caterpillar sitting in a spot free of obstructions.
This is a pretty extreme crop, about 25% of full frame.

7D Mk II, 500mm f4L IS + 1.4 TC
1/500, f11 Exposure Comp -.33
ISO 200

Hi Matt--Looks pretty good for your jumbo macro on-the-fly setup.  Comp and colors are  pretty good.  The detail sharpness is certainly less than what you could have captured with a true macro setup, but it is darned good for this subject with that particular lens setup............................Jim

Yes, Matt, a good look at this cat. with a nice clean background.  I was thinking that it's just a hair soft, then I read your techs and understand why...between the lens combination and the major crop your climbing a steep hill.  You might try processing for some extra contrast, that would probably compensate nicely for the limited resolution of your lens combo, provided it didn't do bad things to the noise.  I'm chuckling, thinking about carrying around that lens combo for macro work.

Excellent!  Tough to get them on the same plane of focus, and still enough.
Great colours, perfect placement in the frame, and sweet BG.
