Lava Beds National Monument, Ca
Laid down to minimize the unattractive and unnatural asphalt roadway he was laying on.  7D, 500/F4+1.4, F8, 1/1250, ISO 400.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions, Dave

Very nice. Great perspective, focus and background. Would like to have taken photo of you and the rattler both lying down and facing each other. Were you on the asphalt, too?

I was laying on the pavement as well.  My wife was in the truck convinced that I would either be run over or snakebit.

A very neat shot, Dave, and an excellent lens choice for this species.  sad
The low angle worked extremely well and the shadow of the head on the body conveys that classic rattle outline.

A very much, "in your face" look at this rattler.  I like the dof, the raised rattles, and the excellent details in the snake's body.  You've also got a good balance between the road, the snake, and the clean background above the snake.

Very wise to go low, regardless of the pavement (at least that gave you a clear view).  Nice job achieving enough depth of field, something that's sometime forgotten with these smaller, closer subjects.

HI David,

Wildlife shots don't often come much "cleaner" than this! I quite like the positioning of the tail on the edge of the frame and your DoF seems to be pretty much spot-on (I find in these situations that too many photographers tend to open up the aperture too much...good call on stopping down to f8 on this one).

Cheers...
