Haematopus palliatus

I captured this Oystercatcher in last light of the day on the North Beach at Fort Desoto. I had to go wading up to my waist and shoot toward the bank for this one.

1D Mk IV, 500mm f4L IS + 1.4 TC
1/1000, f5.6, Exposure Comp. -.33
ISO 400

In my experience, it is very difficult to get good images of oystercatchers. This is an excellent image.  You handled the darks, whites and colors extremely well, and the background is wonderful.  One small nit: the white spot below the tail is a bit distracting.

Matt,
Great image, I agree with Jim on removing the white spot.

HI Matt
You really went all out for this photograph.  Great detail and control of the whites and blacks.

Really nice one, Matt.  Worth the wade as long as you didn't have anything like a memory card in your pocketcheeky.

Excellent pose and head turn and I like the low angle.

Great light and pose.  Nicely exposed and love the low angle.  The head/bill colors really pop off that darker background.

Terrific color and detail on this one Matt. Perfect placement of the Oystercatcher.  Good view of the eye and beak with good color and appropriate saturation.  I wish we had these in where I live but I would have to drive for several hours north to find them.
