I photograph this Great Blue Heron at South Cove in Old Saybrook, Ct, The cove is home to a few Herons and around 20 Swans.  This shot was hand held, then set to 16 by 9 and cropped by 50%. I used Lightroom 5 to work on the shadows and add some clarity and vibrance to the shot.

I like the wing position and pose captured.  I normally use positive exposure compensation when shooting a subject darker than my background.  Crop works, but would also work with less space to fly into.

I like the pose and angle and the slightly open beak, Peter.  The bird seems rather soft in the larger image.

Thanks David and Dennis for the comments.  I was photographing Swans when this Heron flew into my frame, thus the -1/3 exposure setting and as for the solfness, of the larger.  I did not think I could push the image anymore with a crop by
50%.
