Beach Grass

I spent a couple of days at Grayland Beach State Park here in Washington earlier this week and was entranced by the clumps of beach grass in a narrow band on the water side of the dune line.  I started with thinking I wanted a lot of the cool sand ripples in the frame and took the second post that way.  However I really wanted to emphasize the grasses more and it seemed like the best way was to try to get them against the sky, so I started working lower and closer to the major clump on the right side of the frame.  Even there I cropped a bit off the bottom and right to eliminate the most oof foreground sand.

Both taken with 5DIII, and EF28-70 f/2.8L lens, hand held.  Main post:  55 mm, f/18, 1/100, iso 500, + 1/3EV, cropped to 5584x3456.
Follow-on post: 39 mm, f/18, 1/40, iso 500 +2/3 EV.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis, I like both views.  You're right about the first one doing a fine job of emphasizing the grass.  The repeating clumps of grass shrinking into the distance both helps that emphasis and adds a good sense of depth.  The low angle view emphasizes the shape of that first clump very well.  The second post presents a fine looking beach scene where the strongly angled light sets off the ripples and the dunes very well.

Dennis, after toggling back and forth a few times, I think I like the silhouette of the grass against the sky a bit more. Both are really nice, simple, sharp and interesting compositions. I like the bright highlights of the sun against the dark grasses and the neutral sand which has lots of interesting lines and patterns.

Great perspective and interesting elements. The subtle wind-blown sand lines add much.
Fine work! Congrats on the WP!
