Dawn Gull & Repost

Once again, I haven't a clue as to the species.  Photographed a couple of days ago at Grayland Beach, Washington.  I was out for the sunrise on the beach and the gulls were inspecting all the beached crab carcasses from the previous high tide to see if there was anything edible in them.  I liked the reflective quality of the thin film of water on the sand in this image.

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, hand held, f/6.3, 1/1250, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering, +2/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to a 13.6 MP 4x5 before resizing for the web.  Taken at 7:04 AM on September 13th.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

I really like this, Dennis. The early morning light and the reflection are great.  Very well done!!!!

I can't help with the ID. Not real good with western species.

Beautiful lighting and composition with the reflection here Dennis, great behavior with the crab feast as well.  To my eye the head of the gull in the larger version isn't tack sharp so I would add a bit of selective sharpening there.  To my eye this is either a Glaucous-winged Gull or a Glaucous-winged X Western Gull hybrid which is very common on the outer coast.  devil

Great low POV, Nice morning light. I think the intended focus was on the eye and may have picked up some front focus due to part of the claw in that region. The crab itself is quite sharp, lending credence to the surmise. I think selectively sharpening the Gull alone is an easy fix.cool

Thanks for all the input and the ID.  I was so enamored of the general scene that I never did zoom in all the way to check for detail.  Here's a version with extra sharpening in the head, though I'm afraid nothing will pull it all out.

Hi Dennis
I think I like the first photo.  The softer look give warmth to the photograph.
