What I like about the photo as further emphasized by this treatment is the fact that it just looks like the egret is completely surrounded around, above and below.

I've posted the regular version in Avian with my questions about the photo itself.

If you have any comments about this (lighter/darker, etc.) I'd greatly appreciate them.

I noticed that in the Avian shot you re-posted with the photo cropped more.  I wonder if that would help here as well.  I like the aspect ratio, but perhaps a bit off the top, right, and bottom. In any case, I like what you've done. There's a nice painterly, artistic feel and the colors compliment each other nicely.

Allen, thank you for your feedback!  Here is a 4x5 aspect version with some off the top and bottom.  I didn't take anything off the right at this point.

This is so subjective.  The second one emphasizes the egret more (which I like, being a bird photographer), while the original emphasizes the foliage surrounding the egret, which I suspect was the purpose of the photo. Sorry, I wasn't clear on what I meant when I mentioned "aspect ratio".  The original, I believe, is 4x6 and I thought just bring in the upper and lower right corners a bit might help, keeping a 4x6 comp.
