Fall Still Life

by Kathy Barnhart

Gallery: POP PhotosPosted October 19, 20162,518 views6 comments
This is my first attempt at a still life, and I'm not sure which gallery it would go in. I figure this is as good as any other.
I took this photo in a darkened room, so then I ended up boosting the ISO and getting a fair bit of noise. It softened the image quite a bit to do the noise reduction. I am mainly wondering whether the composition is OK, or whether the blank wall on the right (which I have added a texture to) is too large and empty.

Thanks in advance for any comments or critiques.

Canon 5d,M3, ISO2000, 45mm, f/18, 1/5 sec. Tripod. Taken into LR and PS, textures added. Noise reduction in Define2.

I like this.  It has a painterly, old world look about it. I think it is laid out very well. I like the fringe hanging over the table. The composition with the tall vase and flowers and the more squat basket and pears works for  me. I think the blank wall is fine; adding something there would probably be a distraction and I think it is balanced by the vase and flowers. I would have probably placed this in photo art given the painterly quality, the added texture, and the softening with noise reduction.  An outstanding first attempt.devil

Kathy: the negative space and the texture you've added to that wall are a big plus. Without that texture the wall would be featureless. I like the overall L shaped composition and the addition of the fringed woven material. (men don't know the name of that object cool). The overall warm tones are very apropos for a Fall image. Find some wall space for this one.  Richard

I agree with the other comments, but a very small nit: at the bottom of the basket is a bright crescent shaped line which on enlargement seems to stand out. If you were to print this large that might be a bit distracting.

Kathy,
All the positive aspects of this work have been covered nicely and I agree with them all. I will had that you have presented a very nice mood with this image that draws the viewer in. I would clone out the bright line mentioned by Jim, once you see, you can stop looking at it.
Well done and Congratulations on the WP . . .  laugh

Quite "painterly". Very well-composed and presented.
IMO, adding the texture to the wall makes  it "Photo Art".
Congrats on a fine WP!
