Stalker

Trying something different for fall near home - a fairly formless composition to capture the feel close-up of this wild wet woodland where dead willow trunks stalk the undergrowth, the leaves from fresh shoots turning yellow in the autumn.  Would be interested to know whether this approach works for people or not.

I like the idea, Ian, and I like some elements of this image such as the downed log in the foreground.  However, it feels to me like the angle doesn't quite hit it.  By the way, there's a curved branch on the left with lots of stems sticking out of it that looks like it has wonderful possibilities if you can find the right pov.  It would put a great curved line in that could anchor the composition.

Thanks for the comment, Dennis - much appreciated.  I will have a look at that curved branch for another way of doing this, though I'm not sure if it's a branch thick enough to stand out.

This absolutely works for me.  In fact, I love it.  I know from my own experience in the past that most of the time the beautify that I see in a "fairly formless composition" isn't often seen by anyone else.  But to me this is gorgeous.

Your approach here works for me, Ian!  I like these "wild" types of scenes.  Nicely done!

Hi Ian.  Unlike the previous post of the path, this has no point of focus or leading line.  The feel of a wetland and its undergrowth does come through but I would not have known your thought process without reading the intro.  Its still nice to see fall images from other places.

Ian, as usual, you managed to extract a nice sense of order out of chaos.  That fallen tree does a good job of holding this view together while it lets all of the bright colors behind it set the stage.  I like the thin branch and the greens coming in from the right as well as the curved sapling coming in from the left.  I'm finding that I prefer the smaller version as it blends all the leaves in the back into more of a mass of color.
