The Quiet Woods

This is a picture I made yesterday morning (Saturday) while out for a hike not far from home. It was a wonderful late fall day in the early morning. We had heavy fog to start out and as the sun started to burn through the woods it was wonderfully peaceful and quiet. This birch grove is the same as the one I shot last winter during a heavy snow storm and had posted here on NPN. Still in my gallery here I think. I worked at coming up with a different view of these birches and did like this one. I mostly wanted to try and capture the natural beauty along with the quiet and peaceful feel of this morning. Larger version included.

This one in the large version does have an emotional appeal. Your love for the woods is very evident with this image. I particularly like cinnamon browns with white birches in the right section of the image. This image also looks good in b&w but those brown colors really do add a lot so color is better. It's a personal image. I like it.

I think you achieved your aim; a really sweet portrait of this stand of trees.  I like the quality of the faint blue sky and reddish branches that always say "winter" to me, and although the composition looks very casual, you have a really nice placement and separation in all the individual trunks that show them off well.

Wow.  This is superb Nick.  IMHO, this type of image is the most difficult to effectively compose and capture, and for that reason they're among my favorites.  This image excites me in an emotional way, it grabs my attention and truly EXCITES me.  It makes me want to be there, it makes my heart beat faster, and it inspires me.  Excellent eye to see this, compose and process it in such an effective manner.  This is what photography is all about.  Job well done.

The light drew me to this image. You accomplished your purpose with me as I looked at the image I could feel that quiet, peace of a cool early fall morning.

Love the soft light on these trees, Nick, bringing out the nice detail in the bark.  The whites and blacks of the trees contrasts nicely with the warm tones of the underbrush.  I think you were very successful in capturing the "quiet and peaceful feel of this morning". Nice.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts on this one. I'm especially happy that you enjoyed it because it is one of my favorites of this past year. Having a large metal print done and should have it in a couple more days. I'm also doing one myself on canvas so I can see which way I like best for this scene. Thanks much, Nick

Nick, this is one of my top favorites from your portfolio. While the pattern of the trunks makes for a nicely dynamic balance in the composition to me, I enjoy the transition of colors from bottom to top. The delicate details of the undergrowth add further interest to my eye. Congrats on this one!

This image is very understated, but gorgeous, Nick. The subdued lighting is perfect for bringing out all of the lovely details in this woodland scene. I really love the changing of the seasons in this image and the quite solitude it showcases. Beautiful work.

You can almost smell the damp wood and rotting leaves. And feel the cold air on your cheeks.
