Grizzly Bears

The highlight of my autumn adventures in the Great Bear Rainforest was provided by this pair of grizzly bears.  They went at it like this for hours, and my group was fortunate to be sitting in a Zodiac with a front row seat for the action for part of that time.

This is not a fight to the death.  Instead, it's more of a sparring session.  The bears may have been siblings, or perhaps a pre-courting pair (it was the wrong time of year for mating season).  The larger, darker bear (left) kept sniffing and following the other around, and the lighter bear didn't seem to appreciate the attention all that much.  Eventually, they started going at it, with the lighter bear being much more aggressive most of the time.  Biting, swiping, wrestling and splashing ensued, and as you can imagine it was a blast to witness.

What a great action shot.  Nice that you got both bears facing the camera and with enough separation that each really stands out.

Max - any more space to the right as viewed. Great interaction and I do like the overall colour, but going for more DoF would have helped the circular highlights and pushing the ISO as you know isn't a hardship for the !DX or MKII, at 6400 it's a breeze to deal with any noise.

Steve, I think there was a bit more room to the right, but the large white patch of seagulls was pretty distracting.  Those birds screwed up more than a few shots during this shoot. enlightened

Exceptional image! Great look at the faces and tack-sharp.
The crop is fine with me -

'Those birds screwed up more than a few shots during this shoot.' - totally agree, they can be a real pain and were in biblical numbers in Katmi.

The action, the expression, and details of the bears are top shelf!  I agree the only nits are background and intrusion of circular highlights. The  rolling eyes of bear on our left and fully open mouth of the bear on our right are wonderful.

Funny I don't mind circular highlights at all.
Great action, intimate framing and earthy tones.
Must've been a blast!

And so opinions can differ greatly - I personally LOVE the circular highlights and shallow DOF. GREAT shot! devil
