Waiting for Gt Fountain

On the last day that roads were open in Yellowstone this year, the timing looked good for a Great Fountain eruption near sunset.  While the early eruption signs were encouraging, there was only lots of mist as the sky to the west colored up nicely but the eruption waited until after dark.  (5D3, 24-70 f2.8 @ 43mm, 1/60 s, f/10, iso 400, tripod)

This is beautiful, Mark!  The color, mist and horizontal lines come together in beautiful chorus.  Nicely done!  devil

Too bad you missed the eruption, but you still came away with a fine image, Mark. I like the contrasting warm and cool colors, the nice reflections of light and clouds in the pools, and the rising steam.

I agree with Scott; even without the eruption you captured a nice image. The colored sky with the fog and foreground lines came together nicely.

Mark,

Too bad about the eruption, but I think it's safe to say you've got a beautiful image without it!  Great color, great sky and I really like the pools and formations.  No nits here!

Mark, Those pools with the reflections look great and the steam really adds some interest. That sky is beautiful! Capturing the eruption would have been great but you still pulled off a wonderful image even without it. Very nice.

Fine contrast between the peacefulness of the scene as is and the impending activity suggested by the steam, Mark.  In the large version especially the strange cloud shapes and the reflections on the water in the fg bring nice touches of light into the overall darkness.

Nothing wrong with the mist! Looks real sweet. The mist give it kind of an other worldly look to go with the real nice sky. Very nice!

This works very well for me, Mark. I love the reflected sky and the steam. The sky itself is icing on the cake.

The steam vents nicely balanced each other.  while a full eruption might have been nice, you may have missed those nice salmon colors of the sky. The separated pools lead me nicely into the scene.
