Very centered Portrait   of Bull Elk . Snow and cold @ -29 was challenging . One battery failed very shortly ,  but a reserve battery was available.
Nikon D500 @600mm, vr normal, F8, 1/800, ISO1000, one pass selective NR, hand held , slight crop to vertical, taken Mid-Day

Comments appreciated.

"Very centered" and appropriately so in my opinion. The detail view is a must view to get the full impact of this exceptional image. The falling snow and the snow on the bull are big plusses. Very nice!

Very cool (no pun intended). Where was this taken, just curious. His look seems to to saying "what the hell are you looking at buddy". What is your experience with battery life with the D500? My D500 burns through a battery charge much faster than my D750. devil

Hi Bill,

Unique look at this "noble" buck. I think centreing this one was the right way to go, but I'm not sure about the squaring format (to me this is a natural vertical...). Looks to be a little dark in the neck region with some of the darks "blocked up".

Note to John: On the D500 batteries: You probably already know this, but make sure you're using the EN-EL15's labelled with Li-ion20 (as opposed to the older Li-ion01)...the Li-ion01's pull down way faster.

Bill...based on past "Bill-isms" I need proof before I'll accept it was -29 when you shot this! It's -55 here right now so when I head out in a few hours I may need a toque and gloves! enlightened

Cheers...

Brad

Brad, yes all my EN-EL 15's are Li-ion20 but for some reason they sure seem to drain faster in the D500. devil

Bill, this is a fine, regal portrait.  The vertical pattern created by the trees makes for a wonderful background (which is why I don't mind seeing more of it in the squarish crop).  I could see this potentially working with a slight crop from bottom, in which you'd just have the head and neck, while eliminating the body and the light patch of snow at left... but it works well as presented.

Bill, the looking up at him and the warmth in his fur make this a special view.  That's also quite a rack.

Hello ,  Great to get your feedback and comments! Very much appreciated.

I get an opportunity several times during the winter months to see, observe, and thoroughly enjoy the Elk.

During my AV Show presentations I have several shows on the Elk , with slides and few GoPro video clips interspersed.
They are a unique creature  that  is a pleasure to enjoy ! :)

Best for the upcoming New Year seasons !
