War Coral

Corals have pigments that fluoresce under blue wavelengths of light which reduces the energy content of the light.  This is a species of Favites that is flourishing in my reef tank. The LED lights in my tank are full spectrum, but biased with blue/violet portion of the spectrum.  I adjusted the white balance in Lightroom to get the colors as close to what my eyes are able to discern for natural color and used a light profile generated with a Spyder Colorcheckr 24.  I also under-exposed the photos to reduce the hot areas in the center of each polyp. I need to continue to work on this type of image as I am not totally satisfied about the results. K5 IIs 180 mm f3.5 (1/13 sec at f10, ISO 400)  17 image stack PMAX retouched for ghosts and cropped for comp....................................Jim

This is quite spectacular. Have never seen War Coral. The color and sharpness are wonderful. Small portions of the tops of a couple of the center areas are still a little bit hot, but you have done a remarkable job of handling that difficult task.  Did you use a polarizer or would that even be a possibility?  Very intriguing image.

Jim, the details here are awesome and the greens really pop.  I can sure see spending a lot of time trying different comps or maybe even stitching a couple of images to get a full frame, nearly square view.  The stacking might be easier (as in fewer stack artifacts) with a smaller f-stop????  Hummm, let's see, 17 images per view, stitched views...sounds like a major winter project. sad

Hi Jim, simply a wonderful shot/stack - An image that is really worth putting in every effort.  I could see the final result big on a wall!  You have already done a great job on the hot spots - Impressed! If they are not truly blown in the RAW then a severely underexposed RAW masked just for these areas might bring back a little detail, otherwise I would be tempted to use a 'texture clone' to bring in a hint of detail ... Like it a lot!

Very cool, Jim.  Looks like a great reef tank with some beautiful corals.  Just out of curiosity, how big is this frame?  I like the composition of the image and the color palette is wonderful.
