The Quiet Winter

This is a picture I made in January 2008 and is still a favorite of mine. It is another shot I made along the Wisconsin River in the backwaters on a morning I remember so well. The quiet and peaceful feel of this winter morning is not one I will forget for a long while. At the time I owned this property and enjoyed it so much. Today it is part of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway and that is a good thing too.
Happy New Year and great shooting in 2017. Cheers, Nick

Such a peaceful and beautiful winter scene, Nick. I can see why it's an old favorite of yours. Even though it looks cold, it is also inviting with the quiet stream in the center and all those mostly vertical tree trunks.

Great winter atmosphere, Nick. I like a lot the sense of depth and the reflections. Very peaceful scene, well done!

Another great winter image, Nick. The only issue I have with this one is the feeling that there are 2 images, a left one and a right one. I'm wondering if burning in the distant trees in the center a bit to provide more definition would help unify the 2 halves. Not an easy task and certainly beyond my abilities. I just think that distant center needs a strong element somewhere in there. Maybe I'm off base here.

It's easy to see why this is a favorite, Nick.  It's an outstanding winter scene with the waterway leading back into the foggy distance and the beautiful snowy landscape on both sides.  It sure looks like a great place to explore quietly.

Hi Nick, I love this image - the 16/9 (?) crop works really well. The almost silver reflection on the water is wonderful with its natural jumble of twigs and logs - I can very well believe how this was a special moment - Even more special when one can recognize such moments at the time for what they are at the time - one of the joys of nature photography cool ...

All the very best for 2017!

Another beauty Nick.  I love the "tunnel" feel in this image, where I can see the scene into infinity.  Lovely tones too.  Keep it up!

Man, you're just nailing these images Nick!  I love this one too even though it's quite different than the others.  Different, good. The fog, cold and mood of your previous posts were prevalent.  This one to me is less about mood and more about depth, details and exploration.  Yes, some fog in the bg, which really adds to this, but the lead-in of the waterway and the details along the way gives this great depth - at least for me.  I love this image and can see this hanging, just about anywhere.

No nits or suggestions what so ever.  A beautiful b&w image.

You are killing it with this set! Another very beautiful image. The waterway works wonderfully to pull the eye through the image. I love the 16 x 9 crop but I can also see a number of other cropping possibilities. Hopefully you worked some alternate comp's of this beautiful scene.

I really like this, Nick.  The crisp reflection in the foreground, the 50/50 (or 3 thirds) composition, and the black and white conversion all work some wonderful magic here.  I'm torn about the idea of getting more detail out of the distance.  In some way, I like how the present feels very clear and the future is very foggy.  That's how life is, and if a river takes us through time, then that's a working story for this.

A lovely winter image. I would definitely leave the soft brighter background as is. Actually some of the foreground elements distract me a little, some on the right corner and I would clone out that bright branch sticking out od the water on the left. Overall I like this very much.

When I first saw this image I thought I had seen it previously.  But then I realized what I had seen was your image with the snowy road going between the trees and I must comment on how similar they are.  This however is a little more over-the-top because of the reflections in the river.   Although there is a similar feel in both images, this one stands out a lot more for me.

Lovely!  I like that soft brightness in the BG.  Excellent job on the water and the tree trunks.
Looks like it was high water.
I can't decide which of these I like the best!!

This is beautiful Nick.   A perfect b/w scene for my taste.  Love the river separating the image.  Quiet and effective.  Happy New Year to you.

I like the composition and that the creek forms a channel that can take the eye to the less contrasty back of the scene.  B&W works nicely here with a good range of tones from deep black to bright white.
