Red-footed Booby or A

That has to be about the simplest bird name in the book before we came along and complicated matters.  This image was taken from a trail starting at Moloaa beach and climbing pretty easily up a bluff and along it.  There are signs indicating that it's a refuge and there's a colony of Laysan Albatross that you can see from the trail if you follow it far enough.  There are several openings that provide good locations to catch the boobies as they soar by (usually overhead, but sometimes at or below eye level).

Access to the beach is through a neighborhood and parking is very limited, so get there early and respect the local property owners.  There is a creek crossing right at the beginning, which was a non-event when we were there, but might cause issues if rains have been heavy.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 516 mm, handheld, f/8, 1/1000, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering, +2 EV (and still had to brighten slightly).  Processed in R5 & CS6.  Cropped a bit top and bottom, took a bunch off the left and added some canvas on the right.  Final size was 11.2 MP before resizing.  I didn't like the looks of any of the standard proportions, so this was strictly arbitrary.  The relatively high iso and exposure compensation unfortunately gave me quite a bit of noise.  Taken January 31st at 9:01 AM.

Comments and criticisms are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

Good work getting this white subject against the white sky. A good body position and good colors showing on the face of the booby.

Great job finding the boobies and getting this image! Great pose, excellent look at the face, and nice eye contact.
There is a bit of noise evident (from here) in the body, but a wonderful image.
Excellent work!

I tried many shots of these fast moving flyers and got nothing this good.  Well done.

I like the high key presentation on this Dennis. I like how it looks like it doesn't have any landing gear. enlightened  Well done!

Nice high key image Dennis, the top of the head gets lost a bit against the white bg but other than that it looks good to me. devil

Hi Dennis,

A nice composition.  The top outline of the bird blends into the BG, but that's what you had to work with.  You may want to selectively sharpen the bill which is softer than the rest of the bird. Other that--a pretty cool shot........................Jim

Nice high key shot of a cool species, Dennis. I would be tempted to bump the contrast on the bird just a bit.

Well done high key image.  I agree that a contrast boost especially around the head might benefit the photo.  Otherwise terrific detail and wing position.
