The Columbia Pokey

This is a detail of one of the walls of the 1850 Columbia Jail. The marble rocks were quarried locally. Local marble was also used in San Francisco and the state capital in Sacramento. I liked the patterns and textures of the stones and the grout.

Nikon D7100
Nikkor 18-140mm @ 40mm
ISO 100, 1/15 s @ f-16

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated. cool

The pokey cell wall made a great image for your abstract eye.  It certainly has dramatic texture. The information about the wall is interesting.  Thanks for posting.

Preston: Good eye and an even better capture. I especially like the textures in the large version. >=))>

Just saw this Preston.  This is uniquely fabulous! Never would have guessed being a wall, let alone from a 19th century jail!

Wonderful image!

Makes for a very good abstract, Preston, with a very pleasing range of hues.  The two dark slabs especially help give the image an appropriately sombre feel.

Preston, this masonry work for that era is amazing. The colorful wall looks like such an artful approach for a "slammer". Could have been a courthouse, school, or church just as easily. Very clean.
My eyes do want to twist it slightly CCW, but just my own view I think.....enlightened

I like the color palette very much - it does say "old" very well. And the image does give a strong feeling of a sad building.
