Great Egret

This egret was walking along behind this hedge up above my wife and I as we were looking for hummingbirds in the cape honeysuckle near the Newport Back Bay Ecological Preserve in Newport Beach, California. It was unusual to get such a low perspective with the egret up against the blue sky. I cropped out a bit of apartment building on the left, behind the egret, and cloned out a particularly unruly OOF group of leaves on the right side. Hope the OOF leaves are not too distracting in the foreground. Canon 5D3, f8, 1/3200 sec (hummingbirds), iso 640 (Hummers), 100-400 ISL with 1.4 Ext, at 420 mm, Handheld, 85% of original frame.

Hey Ed,
This is a unique image of this Egret, the POV is outstanding, the colors are wonderful and I really like the foreground environment. The light clouds in the sky add interest to the overall composition and the detail in the large version is great. You handled the harsh light on this difficult subject very nicely.
Well done . . .  devil

Nice color and handling of the whites. Detail is good. The question pops up as to where is room for the virtual feet? The only answer I have ever had when this gets asked is to say, "It's not that kind of photo."wink

Nice job on the whites Ed. That blue sky really makes the Egret pop. I don't mind the comp (missing virtual feet). The foreground vegetation frames the bottom well and looks pleasing.

Certainly a different view of an egret than one is accustomed to seeing.  But I certainly like the way it stands out against the blue sky.  Nice pose.  Looks good against the honeysuckle.  Exposure and detail are well done.  A nice all-around image and different which I think is a good thing.

An interesting and almost disquieting perspective, Ed.  In the larger image it reminds me of the monster about to pounce.  A fun image.
