A few friends and I went camping below Mount Hood weekend before last. We were blessed to have an afternoon of Hood coming in and out of view; that doesn't happen routinely this time of year. While the area we were camping in was mostly cloud-covered, Hood itself had great light for most of the afternoon. This was shot from in front of our tents.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, handheld at 23.3mm (63.0 mm equivalent)
1/500 sec at f/11 and ISO 125
I've cloned out some snowshoe tracks from the foreground.

Beautiful, John.  Just goes to show, it's not the camera, but the operator.  The large displays a fascinating range of tones.  Could make a killer b/w.  Looks like a chilly trip.

Gorgeous image, John. I love the color combination of the white snow and the blue of the sky and the clouds finish off everything rather nicely.

A great scene - I do miss a snowy Hood in the winter and half of the summer.
The range of light and contrast of blue and white, with the fog thrown in, is marvelous.
I'd also like t see a B&W version, but pretty sure I'd prefer this one.
Very fine work!

Great composition!  I like the way the comp leads to the top of the mountain.

Beautifully done, John.  I like the light on Mt. Hood as well as the layering of the triangles in the composition.  That is a lot of snow - there isn't much rock in the peaks that is not blanketed in snow.

Wow, this could convince me to start winter camping again!
You have make a wonderful capture of the beauty of the snowy landscape in a wide range of lighting conditions.  Powerfully dramatic and subtly soft at the same time.
For those of us who know your work, it's not surprising that you could produce a beautiful image with a "pocket camera" but this image also shows what a capable camera this is (obviously shot in Raw).  The maintenance of the range of tones as well as the beauty of the low contrast foreground speak to your processing skills, too.

John,

Great to see an image post from you.  I guess my first thought might be.... your campsite view sure didn't suck.... angel cool Of course this wouldn't matter if this was taken from a ski resort parking lot... the image is breath taking. The break in the clouds showcasing peak is wonderful; the snow-scape and pines just icing on the cake.

If I had any suggestion, it might be to drop the darks of the evergreen trees for some added contrast. But then, the atmosphere/conditions may have been such that the scene was a little misty, so this is more of an observation rather than a nit.

What a view!

This is stunning, John. Beautifully composed and processed. If I were to nit pick I would like just a smidge more room at the bottom.

Your images are always so attractive and so easy looking, but I know they're not (That's a compliment BTW).  Your compositions are always carefully constructed and your processing a dead on perfect.  Well done John, again!
