Shot near Kalapana on Hawaii. My geologist brother is enjoying the view of the vast lava field created by the stream of lava that is currently forming the "firehose" photographed so often. His advice? "Don't breathe the volcanic gases too much!" It was a great day, even though the AF on my camera broke, and I now have a manual focus body...

Nikon D610, 18-35 AF-S @ 18, tripod.

Please let me know what you think. :)

Fantastic shot, and the silhouette adds a lot to the photo. The foreboding sky, the steam and smoke, all add up to a great mood and view of this volcanic landscape. Excellent.

Basil, this is a great image. I love the smoke, clouds and otherworldly foreground. Your brother adds a nice sense of scale. It looks like the horizon curves down to the left. I might try to straighten that out.

Thank you all for commenting! I didn't notice the horizon before - it's probably some lens distortion that makes the horizon bend (it's straight in the middle). Will have to be straightened out with a lens profile. :)

A very mesmerizing image!
The textures and lines, steam, sky, man for perspective - all combine to make a very powerful image.
Congrats on the excellent WP!

Excellent photo and a very unique, weird scene, Basil!  The inclusion of your brother really adds some scale and a focal point.  Nice job with the exposure and processing also.
