Giant Anteater

This was an exciting moment from our Pantanal, Brazil photo tour last year.  It was near the end of the tour and we hadn't seen this species yet, several of the participants expressed a desire to photograph it.  Being as though it's a shy and uncommon creature that you can kind of encounter anytime but you never know when and it ranges wide areas, it's not easy to set off to see one. But our local guides managed to find one near a dirt road on Piuval Lodge near dusk.  I was duly impressed (with both our guides and the anteater)

Sweet.  Though it's on the road, I appreciate the clear view of the entire body... I don't think I've ever appreciated how long their tails are.

That is quite the critter, Nate, the soft light lets the colors and details of the anteater show well and the road makes a nicely clean background.  I'm fascinated with it's stride as it seems that both right legs are in the air at the same time, that's an unusual gait.

Nate it looks like it was really moving across the road here. Nice capture of the action.

One of my favorite critters.  This shows how they walk on the top of their claws so the claw tips stay nice and sharp.  Well done......................Jim

Hi Nate,

I'm with Max in wishing it wasn't on a road, but have to say that the TWO lifted legs instantly brought a smile to my face (almost like the beast is dancing). And it's real hard to look at this one and be blown away by how "different" some critters are. Very cool...

Cheers...

Wonderful frame of this not so common critter. Two lifted legs give it a somewhat comic gate. Though roads are not a favorable setting, but here it allows us to get a full look at the Anteater.enlightened
