I was told that more often than not, you end up getting skunked at this spot. I was told that the odds of a colorful sunset here were not good. When I first reached the ledge, I thought it was all true. The marine layer had consumed the sky, the horizon, the ocean and everything else but this sea stack. My initial thought process was to capture some kind of long exposure and process it as a black and white. About 10 minutes before sunset, the fog began to clear and the sky showed glimpses of that elusive color. Soon the entire sky was engulfed in flames and the light was so intense that it began to reflect off the water. In the thirty minutes that ensued, I got a whole range of images both left and right of this composition.

Good times with good friends!

Appreciate any thoughts you have on this one.

Sairam, I'm glad you you were able to capture this to share with us. This is fantastic! The processing is just about perfect for me. Is this multiple exposures?

I feel like I want the view to be moved just a little bit down and to the left from this in order to see more of the foreground ledge and to move that stack a little more centered horizontally. Having said that, I think this is beautiful as is. I hope you post more images from this evening!

Thanks all!

This is a single exposure actually. With the amazing DR of sensors these days, it's quite easy to open up shadows with minimal noise artifacts if at all.

Tech wise : ISO 100, f/16 , 1.3 sec @ 16mm

I hope the saturation levels are in check. The sky was intensely vibrant, but I don't want to be carried away and posterize the image.

Sweet mother of light.  Wicked cool.  Gotta love that fire on the water.   Think your shadows are way too open in that stack or at least too bright overall, especially considering how backlit everything seems here.  Maybe just a tad.  Maybe personal opinion :)  Way to get after it!

Wow, what energy and color.  Love the way that rock flows into the boiling water.

This is beautiful Sairam. I love the flow and swirl of the water around the rock, the strength of the rock features, and that amazing light in both water and sky. Excellent.

If you don't try, your guaranteed to miss the light; way to stick it out. Your persistence paid off with a wonderful image Sairam. My eye would like either more or less of the foreground, but it's not a biggie.

This is a tremendous image Sairam.  Love everything about it.  As was previously mentioned, maybe a little more view of the water/cliff on the bottom, but fantastic as posted.

A gorgeous scene, Sairam!  Glad you stuck around for the finale!  I personally like the composition just the way it is.  The mass of foreground cliff is well balanced by the background land mass on thr upper right. If you cropped tighter you would lose too much of that beautiful swirling water which is such an important part of this scene.  If you had included more of the foreground cliff the scene would be too heavy on the lower left and the added water probably wouldn't have been worth it.  I do agree with Aaron that the face of the rock could stand a little contrast and be a tad bit darker.  My brain struggles with the side opposite the light source being the brightest part.  That's just nit-picking though.  It's an amazing image that II could hang on the wall and never get tired of! devil
