Juvenile BH Grosbeak

Another juvenile male Black-headed Grosbeak.  I don't know if this is the same one I posted a while back or not.  This one gave me quite a few good poses and used a more suitably sized perch for some of them.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 468 mm, tripod with ballhead and Wimberley sidekick, f/8, 1/250, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to a 15.8 MP 4x5 before resizing. There was a bright patch above and to the left of the bird and I clones some of the darker bg over it.  Taken July 16th at 11:34 am under cloudy skies.

Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Really good pose, eye contact and catch light, Dennis.  You have some excellent detail in the breast plumage and comp is very good.  On my first impression it seemed a little overexposed, but that's subjective to different monitors in different viewing conditions.  Nicely done.

Great pose, and excellent detail, Dennis.  It shows a little light on my monitor as well, but like Bill said, that's subjective to different monitors.  I am not familiar with the Grosbeak, so getting to see it up close, and a juvenile at that, is pretty neat.

I love the excellent bokeh effect that you were able to get. I also like how the pose of the bird shows how inquisitive they are. Excellent lighting and framing of the subject as well.

Hi Dennis, for me what makes it is the HA, that jaunty lean to the left. The blurred BKG I find a little too smooth, at a ISO1000 you really only need vey little NR I feel and the image then has more of a reflective 'look & feel'. I quite like the 10x8 format (?), but the broken perch could be better. The ISO difference isn't huge to go to 1600 and even on a tripod a fraction more SS would not hurt the image, it's only old cameras that really cannot handle highish ISO and so SS is less than it could be.

If you ever get the chance to go to any Canon stand exhibition, the old fears of high ISO is long gone and push things.

The exposure is fine.  I think the light area behind the head creates a paradoxical impression of overexposure as others had noted.  Cool pose.   Wonderful detail. Despite al the Black Headed Grosbeaks visiting me this year, I have not seen any juveniles yet.

Good one Dernnis
Little less contrast maybe. No big deal.
Perch end a bummer
